Two critical elements to ViewerFreedom are
- Information to make an informed choice and
- Solutions to be able to exercise that choice.
Some would argue that the ViewerFreedom mission statement opposes artistic rights. However, we claim that artistic freedom and viewer freedom are compatible.
Artistic freedom includes not only the right to choose whether to create a film but also the right to choose how to craft it.
Viewer freedom includes not only the right to choose whether to view a film but also the right to choose how to experience it.
The balance between artistic and viewer freedom has an analogy in the realm of books. The author can choose how to craft a book. The reader has the right to choose how to experience a book; they are free to read the pages in any order or skip selected sections. Few would claim that a book must be read either cover to cover or not at all.
Both artistic and viewer freedom are needed in order to avoid undue control by one group over another; only then is there balanced freedom. Only when there is balanced freedom is there freedom for all.
